La Maison de l'Ambassadeur

Book a stay or an event in this architectural gem and enjoy a slice of history

Built in 1740, La Maison de L'Ambassadeur is a beautiful Maison de Maître, recognised by the Mairie as one of the most important houses in Carcassonne.  It acquired its unique Art Nouveau facade in 1910. Protected by the Bâtiments de France, it is an important part of the national patrimoine.

The house acquired its name from the French Ambassador to Finland, who resided there, but then gifted it to his wife in the early 20th Century.

With its generously proportioned rooms, sweeping marble staircase, towering ceilings and wrought iron balconies, you can experience the opulence of a home once used for entertaining diplomats.

A perfect location

The house is located in the heart of the Bastide de Saint Louis, only a block from the cafés and restaurants of the Place Carnot. Explore Les Halles covered market and Le Musée des Beaux Arts, which are also on your doorstep. The mediaeval city is a 20 minute walk across the Pont Vieux and along Rue Tivalle.

The shuttle bus from Carcassonne airport stops at the nearby Place Gambetta (less than a 5 minute walk).
Carcassonne station is an 8 minutes walk. Affordable parking is available nearby.

Facilities

The house offers 450 square metres of space for its guests. Featuring high ceilings, intricate plasterwork, marble fireplaces and a sweeping marble staircase, it is an architectural gem. The generous rooms and hallways are testament to its past function as a place for hosting important dignitaries. It is the perfect venue for your wedding, event, or group holiday.

On the ground floor can be found a private bar, fully-equipped kitchen and large reception and dining areas, which lead on to the secluded and shady garden. The garden is equipped with barbecue, mood lighting, Chinese candles and ample dining furniture for warm nights. All six bedrooms on the first and second floors are en suite, and most have access to balcony space. All have reversible air conditioning, mini-fridges and coffee machines.

A flat to the rear of the second floor has two extra bedrooms and a bathroom. Guests can have access to these for an additional charge of 100 euros per night.

The house is LGBTQ+ friendly but it is not suitable for children under 13 years old.
